It's a WINTER WONDERLAND!

It's a WINTER WONDERLAND!

Just as the last little piles of snow finished melting and the river was right back to a good fishing flow, we got a TON of snow yesterday and all last night. We are talking 8-10 inches around the higher elevations and at least five inches of snow here in Maupin. My car was clean when I got home last night, and this is what it looked like this morning:

The forecast calls for a 50% chance of snow tomorrow with a high of 34 degrees. On Sunday, the high shoots up to 42 degrees and rain is likely on Monday, which lines up nicely for a good "Spring Cleaning" for the Deschutes. Here is the depth of the snowfall in Maupin:

What I mean by a "Spring Cleaning" is a significant high water event where the river could top 20,000 CFS and the weedy shallow areas of the river will get scoured out a bit.  This won't really start in earnest until late on Sunday when the river will start rising due to all the snow melt.

The last snow storm filled up all the reservoirs and catch ponds all across the higher elevation farm fields, so this melt will end up entirely in the Deschutes because the ponds and reservoirs can't hold any more water.

Until the river jacks way up, the fishing will continue to be good using nymphs for most of the day with a small dry fly window around noon for the Blue Winged Olives to make an appearance.

Keep an eye on the river gauges over the next week or so. We should be fine through the weekend and the river with snow everywhere is really quite spectacular. Come on out!!

We will see you on the river!
