The bobbin is what holds the thread as you wrap it onto the hook. A lot of thread used in tying is very delicate, thus the smooth ceramic inserts in this bobbin protect thread and keep it from getting shredded. The delrin feet hold the spool firmly. Bobbin length is a matter of personal preference. Over many years of tying you will find that you come to prefer a certain length of bobbin. One can never have enough bobbins threaded and ready to go on the fly tying bench.
