Norm Woods Special
Sure, it looks like a three-year-old tied it, and it doesn't float very well, but this low-rider is the predominate fly in the fly boxes of all of our Deschutes River trout guides. The secret of this fly is in the tangerine wing color - viewed from below it looks like the translucent wing that lays flat on the back of the big golden stones. Fish it in the film - greasing only the wing - and let it get sucked under by the strong river currents..you'll hook as many trout with the "drowned" Norm Woods as you will with the dry version. The Norm Woods Special isn't the prettiest fly out there, but it just may be the most productive wherever Hesperoperla pacifica fly. Don't let the mid-May salmonfly/stonefly hatch pass by without pitching this taste treat out in front of the pickiest trout - you won't be disappointed!
