| Guide for Deschutes Angler-Amy Hazel |
 |
The young lady behind the counter is Amy Hazel, one of the only female fly fishing guides in the region. She has been guiding trout and steelhead for John Hazel & Company since 1999. Prior to moving out to the Deschutes to guide year-round, Amy spent 15 months on a solo journey around the world in search of great fly water. She cast her fly in 19 different countries along the way, has hooked fish on the fly in all continents but Antarctica. If you are interested in doing a self-guided fly fishing adventure, whether in search of monster New Zealand Browns, Australian Baramundi, Indian and Nepalese Mahseer, Irish Atlantic Salmon, Zambian Tigerfish, or Tierra Del Fuego's Sea Run Browns, talk to Amy because she has "been there, done that." Her fly fishing endeavors have been the focus of several national magazine articles. Amy is a recognized speaker and program presenter, having given slide presentations and lectures to nearly all of the fly clubs in the Northwest and several others across the country.
Amy has developed several favorite fly patterns for steelhead and trout and takes on the role of commercial fly tier during the off-season. The Green Butt Lum Plum, and the Girlie Girl are just two of her steelhead patterns that have found their way into many of her clients' fly boxes and hearts (not to mention the mouths of steelhead). Look for some of her specialty patterns in the fly bins of Deschutes Angler.
As a casting and angling instructor, Amy is very patient and able to explain complex angling concepts in simple terms that anyone can grasp. These qualities, along with her fun-loving personality, make Amy a favorite with JHC clientele. Amy and John Hazel live on the river in Maupin. When not guiding, Amy enjoys tromping around on their ranch on horseback surrounded by dogs.
