Spey Casting Clinics for Beginner to Expert Casters Spey Casting Clinics for Beginner to Expert Casters

John and Amy Hazel offer a select number of Spey casting clinics on their home water of the Deschutes. Come float the river with two of the best Spey instructors/casters in the industry. John and Amy Hazel are the stars of the best-selling Spey video, Introduction to Spey Casting, parts of which you may have seen on recent segments of Fly Fish TV. This production has been reviewed by Spey casters worldwide as the best instructional video on two-handed casting - it is the next best thing to being on the water with the experts themselves. But why settle for the next best thing - join John and Amy on the Deschutes for one of our great Spey Clinics.

Your instructors are true Spey professionals who have many years of teaching the complex concepts of two-handed casting. John Hazel is one of the true pioneers of Spey casting in the US. He was one of the first guides to teach his clients to use two-handed rods for steelhead and was instrumental in designing the first production Spey rods in the US in the early 1980s. Amy began teaching Spey casting in 1999 and has taught hundreds of anglers to use a two-hander for steelhead on the Deschutes. John and Amy's love for Spey casting an enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. You will come away from the clinic with new insights on Spey casting and fishing with a two-hander and a great set of Spey skills.

Whether you are brand new to Spey casting or very experienced with the two-hander, there is much to learn from the Hazel's decades of experience with the Spey rod. Each clinic is limited to six students, giving us an intimate 3 to 1 student to teacher ratio. You will float the Deschutes and practice your casting on both sides of the river because it is critical that you hone your casting skills on both river left and river right - something that most Spey classes overlook. Keeping our Clinic size small allows us to spend huge amounts of time working one-on-one with each student, tailoring the pace of curriculum to each student's comfort level. More >>

Women's Fly Fishing School Women's Fly Fishing School   Our "Chicks with Sticks" fly fishing class is a great way to learn the fly fishing basics in a relaxed non-competitive environment. Amy Hazel, is at the helm of the driftboat, taking the class of three ladies on a full day river float through the magnificent Deschutes Canyon.

The class begins in our fly shop with an overview of the type of equipment that we use in fly fishing. Rental waders and boots as well as fly rods and reels will be provided for all students in the class free of charge. If you already have your own equipment, please feel free to bring it with you.

After an overview of the gear, we head on out to the river and climb aboard Amy's very stable and safe 16 foot drift boat. The chicks with sticks will float 8-9 gentle miles of the Deschutes River stopping along the way to learn casting basics, enough fishing knots to be self sufficient, and how to wade in the river safely. Class participants will learn the basics about different fly designs and will learn when to choose one type of fly over another.

We will have a nice mid-day break for a hearty deli-style lunch, during which time we can review and practice our important fishing knots. Knowledge is power - especially when it comes to knots. We will master the knots in order to be independant anglers with no need to ask for assistance from our significant others during the course of a fishing day!

After lunch we will again work on our casting skills and learn how to read water - which is to look at the river and determine the most likely areas where trout will be. Once we understand where trout live and how trout behave, we will then concentrate on understanding their feeding behavior and how to fool them into eating an artificial fly instead of the real thing. The chicks with sticks will wrap up the day with lessons in hooking, playing, landing and releasing fish. As a part of the class tuition, each angler will receive a fly fishing book that comprehensively reviews all of the lessons of the day.

Come join us for some serious fun on the river and a chance to get away from it all!

Class size is limited to 3 anglers per class. Classes fill quickly, so book soon. More >>
